About MeI have been writing stories and poems since learning how to write at the age of six. Now I'm a bit older than that but, inside, I am still the 8 year old girl + read more who found a kindred spirit in Pippi Longstocking.

With a Master of Education degree from Simon Fraser University I teach creative writing at elementary schools and Writing For Children courses around the world. I have been guest lecturer at several universities and recipient of the Region West Presidential Award for Reading & Technology of the International Reading Association. And regular serve on the faculty of the Oregon Coast Children's Book Writers Workshop.

I conduct author visits and love to share my enthusiasm for reading and writing with some 25,000 students and teachers each year. I visit International Schools all over the world, from Abbotsford to Zimbabwe.

My 33 books for children have been awarded many recognitions, including a shortlisting for Canada's TD Book Award for A Brush Full of Colour, the picture book biography of Ted Harrison.
When you work alone, behind your desk all day, research and rewriting, it is wonderful to get this kind of recognition. My book awards include the Storytellers World Award Honor Title for Emma's Eggs, short listings for the Mr. Christie Award of Excellence, the Forest of Reading, the Shining Willow and the Chocolate Lily Awards and many others. My Librarian is a Camel was shortlisted for Utah's Information Book Award and awarded Teacher's Choice Award. Just recently I was thrilled to be awarded the Crystal Kite Award, a peer voted book award from SCBWI.

My books reflect my interest in the environment and wildlife: A Mountain Alphabet, When We Go Camping, Wild Babies and Logan's Lake. I like humour as you can tell by reading Virtual Maniac, Silly & Serious Poems for Kids and Ms. Bee's Magical Bookcase.

My family and I lived in many different places including The Netherlands, where I was born, Alberta, the Yukon and many other parts of the U.S. and Canada.
When I'm not busy writing, speaking or running my booklovers' B & B Between The Covers on Salt Spring Island, I like to hike or knit (not at the same time!). But what I like best is to get children excited about writing and reading good books! Show Less
