About MeAside from writing for young people I teach elementary school. I'm really interested in history, so many of the books I've written are historical fiction. But + read more before all my writing and teaching my first love in life was animals and, as odd as it might sound, that led me to study archaeology. It's believed that the study of the great apes will help us to understand the first humans who lived millions of years ago. So as part of my training I worked in Borneo with Dr. Birute Galdikas, following orang-utans through the jungle, waist-deep in tea-coloured swamp. It was, and still is, the most amazing thing I've ever done in my life. It was at this time, not surprisingly, that I started writing. At first for newspapers and magazines. Then I began exploring fiction. But it wasn't until I had my own little ones that I discovered how much I enjoyed children's literature. That's when I first entertained the idea of writing kids' books. My first novel, Reading the Bones, was published in 2008.

I received the Governor General's Award for Teaching Excellence in Canadian History. Then six years later I was nominated for the Governor General's Literary Award. Both experiences were highlights in my career as a teacher and an author. Show Less
